A concept takes a product idea and elaborates on how it solves a problem or fills a market gap. This stage may include initial sketches or calculations and should outline the product's features, target audience, performance metrics, and potential demand.

The preliminary CAD (Computer-Aided Drafting) phase typically involves creating 3D CAD models that can be used to produce prototypes . These models serve as the product definition and any future design changes are broken off as a separate revision . This is essential in maintaining organization and documentation of all design changes. Doven Design uses SolidWorks software for 3D design, 2D drawings, and design simulation to achieve precise and reliable results. Assembly drawings with a BOM (Bill of Materials) are critical for managing efficient sourcing and accurate construction of components.

Selling the license for the product involves developing the concept and then licensing it to a company for manufacturing and sales. By licensing a product, you typically receive a royalty from the company for each sale.

Approaching a company or manufacturer for a licensing agreement requires careful preparation, persuasive communication, and a thorough understanding of both your product and the company's needs. Clearly demonstrating the value and uniqueness of your product are key elements in securing a successful licensing deal. Having a functional prototype and an experienced product expert that understands how the product works at a fundamental level can be invaluable in showcasing the product's potential and answering any questions that come up.

Selling the product involves developing a production-ready product, manufacturing it (or using a contract manufacturer), and selling it directly to the market or customers

While DFM (Design for Manufacturability) should be considered during the early design stages, not all preliminary design and processes used for the prototype will be cost- or performance-efficient for production. For instance, components designed for 3D printing may need to be redesigned with draft and split lines for injection molding, depending on product volume. Beginning the production part design process with a focus on manufacturing costs, rates, and quality will significantly reduce expenses and quality issues in the long run.

Testing should be seen as an ongoing process that adapts to changes in product definitions, customer requirements, and regulatory standards. Developing reliable, product-specific test fixtures can enhance efficiency, allowing for quick adjustments and testing when changes occur. Compared to general testing during the "invent" stage, the testing during the "manufacture" stage should be more structured and targeted to ensure that both the components and the product as a whole are safe and reliable. Strategies like FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) can help identify what testing is important.

Engineering doesn't stop after a product launch. Processes and designs can always be improved and adapted to meet changing customer demands and feedback. The first iteration of production often won't achieve the desired profit margins or product performance. There are many ways to improve designs, change materials, enhance production cycle times, and increase production yield to optimize performance and profitability.
